URMSTON 1st XI enjoyed their first win of the season on Saturday with a comfortable seven wicket win over second placed Upton in their first home game of the season.

After another week of poor weather, a green looking track made the toss crucial once again, and with Upton Captain, Nick Rivett calling incorrectly, Rob Tootell immediately asked them to have a bat.

With the return of Kurt Edginton for his first start of the season, Urmston were looking for a quick breakthrough, and Edginton supplied that in the ninth over having Hurworth caught behind by Cartwright for three with the score on just 9.

Tootell then got in on the act leaving Upton teetering at 10 for 2.

Upton then produced their best partnership of the day, with opener Potter and Captain Rivett putting on 56 for the third wicket.

It was Paul Swann who deservedly got Urmston their third wicket, trapping Rivett lbw for 26.

Umpire, Walter Cottrell's finger was again in action for the fourth wicket, with Swann again had opener Potter given out lbw for a top score of 49 before completing his own demolition job clean bowling Atkins for 11 and leaving Upton on 94 for 5.

A quick second burst from Edginton brought him his second wicket, and then a remarkable 3 wickets in one over from Rob Tootell, all three being caught behind by deputising wicket keeper Steve Cartwright, meant that Upton had been bowled out for 130 in the 47th over.

Wicket takers were Edginton 2 for 37, Tootell 4 for 15 and Swann 4 for 23.

Urmston were confident of knocking off this target although there was some immediate concern on the balcony when Craig Grindlay, having a tough trot for Urmston at the moment, was out for 0 with the third ball of the reply.

The score had moved on to 45 when Aussie Ben O'Brien was caught brilliantly at first slip by McGowan off the bowling of Keith Jones for a steady 15.

Cartwright continued to build his quality innings, and with Ian Grindlay added 51 for the third wicket, before Grindlay was caught behind off Jones once again for 22. The game was in the bag however with reliable opener Steve Cartwright carrying his bat with an unbeaten 72 to see Urmston home.

Urmston bagged the 20 win points with Upton managing just six points from the game.

With availability problems easing Urmston now look forward to travelling to bottom placed Warrington next week with a full strength side.
