CAR crime continues to be one of the main problems throughout Trafford with thieves using stolen cars in all sorts of ways.

The vast majority are stolen to order with car 'ringing' rackets the main source of profit for the culprits.

Many of those vehicles taken end up with a new identity or with parts from another vehicle and bobbies warn people to be extra vigilant when buying a used car.

Community safety officer at Altrincham, PC Tony Crompton tells SUM: "Ringing rackets are big business for car thieves and once the car has a new identity it can be sold on to unsuspecting motorists.

"That is why it is always worth remembering a few tips and if you are not sure about the car you are buying, then get in touch with the Crimestoppers SMART (Stop Motor crime And Ring Today) and report anything suspicious."

The SMART campaign is helping police in the fight against car crime and its sponsors Vauxhall have issued tips on how to avoid becoming a victim.

The first ten tips were featured in last week's Billboard and this week includes advice on buying a new or used car such as:

Don't buy a used car until you've read The Home Office's Car Buyer's Guide available from any crime prevention officer. You can also check a car's history with services such as the AA on their used car data check on 0800 234999;

Always view a used car in daylight at the seller's home - it gives you an address. If all is not as it seems and you are not allowed into the house to do the paperwork, then think twice;

Never buy a used car without the registration document and make sure it hasn't been altered and has the DVLA watermark;

Ask to see old MOT certificates and records - most legitimate owners will have kept them;

Make sure that the car's VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) matches the one on documents and there are no alterations to the car or papers;

If you are selling your car for cash, make sure the notes aren't forgeries. If you accept a cheque, wait until it has cleared;

Drive as new a car as possible - cars over eight years old are many times more likely to be stolen;

Don't buy a new car that isn't fitted with an electronic engine immobiliser - if you own an older car consider having one fitted;

consider buying new cars that have a deadlock central locking system;

Look for 'Thatcham' approved security products. These have been tested thoroughly to ensure the products meet a high standard.

PC Crompton adds: "These tips are worth considering in the fight against car crime.

"Also, remember to help the police by calling the SMART Crimestoppers number in confidence on 0800 555111 if you have any information at all about car crime."
