THE POPULAR co-owner of a novelty shop in Altrincham died when his motorbike veered out of control and hit a lamppost.

Richard Antonelli, 34, died instantly in the smash on a right hand bend on Oldfield Road.

Richard - who was known to everyone by his nickname Scrappy - only bought the Suzuki 850cc motorcycle two months ago. It was the first time he had had a motorbike since he was a teenager and he had completed riding lessons before getting the powerful machine.

Richard was the co-owner of Big Boys Toys on Railway Street, Altrincham, which sells skateboards, go-peds and other fun items.

The former St Ambrose College pupil had married Denise, his partner of seven years, just a year ago in Thailand.

Denise, 30, of West Avenue, Altrincham, says: "He was a big kid in a toy shop - he loved his job.

"He was so popular and never had a bad word to say about anyone.

"He was a fun loving and very patient person who had time for everyone.

"Everyone said we had the best relationship in the world."

Richard, who enjoyed camping and walking, grew up in the Altrincham area. His mother, Carol, now lives in Wales and he has a sister, Charlotte.

The funeral is to be held at St Margaret's Church, Dunham Road, Altrincham. The date had not been fixed as SAM went to press - call Ashton Brookes funeral directors on 928 2000/7816 for details.

Police are appealing for any witnesses to the road incident - which happened at 8.10pm on Friday - to contact them on 856 7772.
