SALE Metrolink Station is to get a facelift.

Transport chiefs have agreed to carry out a £100,000 revamp at the stop.

The improvements will focus on refurbishment works and better passenger security.

The platform canopies, booking hall office and lift area will be refurbished, along with the staircases, which will also be painted. CCTV coverage of the station will also be improved.

Speaking at the Sale stop after the Passenger Transport Authority gave the go-ahead for the improvements, Cllr Roland Griffin, authority spokesman for Trafford, said: "I am extremely pleased that we have been able to commit this funding for the Sale Metrolink stop. The authority has already committed substantial funding for a programme of improvement works for all stops along the Bury - Altrincham line. The first phase of these works is well underway with sizeable improvements at several stops along the route.

"The £100,000 made available will provide for a much needed overhaul of the Sale stop, as part of a second phase of stop improvement works along the line. The authority is committed to ensuring that our transport infrastructure is as modern and comfortable as possible and I'm very pleased that passengers using the Sale stop can look forward to a more pleasant and secure waiting environment in the near future."

The second phase of stop improvements along the Bury - Altrincham line will include extensive enhancements to 18 other stops.

Transport bosses have also been exploring development opportunities around Sale station with Trafford Council. Discussions are ongoing and the refurbishment will be coordinated with these plans.

A final schedule of works for Sale will be developed in consultation with the council. It is expected that work will get underway in the spring.
