The most appropriately named musical on the circuit returns to its spiritual home to blast away the cobwebs on those flares and burn the disco down yet again. Oh! What A Night say the billboards and it certainly is.

From the moment the curtain goes up the audience are on their feet in anticipation of the boogie night ahead and they aren't disappointed with a three-hour love train.

With New York pop icon Kid Creole shaking off his coconuts to steal the show as DJ Brutus T Firefly, the packed house is whisked back to the Big Apple in 1976 and to the centre of attention and hottest disco in town - The Inferno.

The incredibly camp doorman Stretch Mulligan, played by Nigel Roche, provides the comedy element and the crowd really starts to get going when he joins four of the other male members of the company in a rendition of The Village People's 'YMCA'.

The story begins when English lad Rik arrives to find his fortune in the States and is immediately thrust in as an emergency bartender at The Inferno. It's not long before he has fell for the owner's daughter, Nikki, but there's a small obstacle in the way of Jack Vettriano - her fianc and manager of the disco.

As Rik (Stuart Ramsay) and Nikki (Rebecca Reaney) grow closer, the Londoner discovers that Jack is plotting to con owner Paul Burns out of the club and in time old fashion the truth comes out and Rik gets his girl.

By that time though you have almost forgotten the storyline - such is the concentration on foot tapping and hand-clapping your way to a breathtaking finale that really does make you feel like dancing - and you do! Dave Pye.

Oh! What A Night is at the Opera House, Manchester until Saturday, December 15.
