YOUR anonymous correspondent "11+ protester" (Readers Write August 22) draws attention to my strong belief that our local grammar schools should remain as beacons of academic excellence.

Following the achievement, yet again, of outstanding A level and GCSE results it is hardly necessary to restate the case for the grammar schools.

What is sometimes overlooked however, is the overall success of our selective system.

It is not just the grammar schools, which achieve remarkable results; the local high schools achieve results comparable to (and often better than) mixed ability comprehensives around the country.

I support selective schooling for the simple reason that it works.
