Asking the questions were Urmston, and hoping to provide some answers we the University, playing in the Manchester Chess League for the first time in 3 years.
Urmston lined up a vastly experienced team for the match, but had to make a last minute substitution when one of their players failed to arrive.
“Supersub” got Urmston off to a fine start with a comfortable win, and this was followed by 2 more victories, putting Urmston in the driving seat. The University then secured their sole win on board 3, before Urmston powered into a 5 – 1 lead with 1 game remaining. Although pressing hard for a win Urmston player Joe Royle was desperately short of time and in his haste contrived to stalemate his opponent when more time would have resulted in a win.
A comprehensive result after last weeks disappointment of being eliminated from the Hartley Trophy on board count after a 2.5 – 2.5 draw.
