SCORES of walkers from Trafford braved the often treacherous Morecambe Bay to raise money for the Christie, the specialist cancer centre.

Eighty-five fundraisers tackled the eight-mile trek which has been described as one of the world’s most wonderful journeys.

The event was organised by the Altrincham and Sale Fundraising Group, which over the years has raised more than £70,000 for the hospital through the annual walk - and £400,000 in total.

Led by the Queen’s official guide to the sands, Cedric Robinson, this year’s walk took almost four hours, much longer than usual due to the condition of the river and an expanse of nearly 10 miles was covered.

Janice Moss, 64, from the fundraising group said; “We were all thanking our lucky stars – on the days leading up to the walk it was pouring down with rain, but the sun shone for us, making the experience a lot more enjoyable and less wet!”

She added: “We’re still counting the money up but have raised over £5,000 so far with more sponsorship still to come in. I’ll be organising the walk again next year so watch this space!”
