SARAH Walmsley was worried about drivers speeding down Oakfield Road, Altrincham, and wrote to Trafford’s head of transportation in disgust.

She said: “I am yet to receive a response though I know it was received. I was recently nearly knocked off my feet by a motorcyclist running a red light, doing about 70mph.”

Sarah’s letter, signed by three other residents, stated: “We are writing to you about mounting safety concerns on and around Oakfield Road.

“This stretch of road serves three schools, a public leisure centre, a 2,500-seater ice rink, numerous homes and offices, a petrol station and car sales dealership.

“Gradually Oakfield Road has become increasingly congested. It also carries a greater number of heavy goods vehicles and large passenger transport vehicles such as double-decker buses.

“The junction of Stockport Road and the A560 at Woodlands Parkway has been acknowledged by Trafford as a junction which is estimated to be operating at capacity by 2012.

“We would argue that the junction is already struggling due to over-capacity in 2009, is a dangerous accident black-spot and requires major alteration before any thoughts of additional capacity with the Altair development can be considered.”

Regarding the concerns, executive councillor Alan Mitchell told SAM: “The safety of all road users is of paramount importance to us and we take the concerns of local people extremely seriously.

“We’re always happy to discuss road safety issues with residents and, in addition to contacting us by letter or over the telephone, our staff are available at the regular neighbourhood forum meetings to talk to local people face-to-face.

“Unfortunately we can’t implement traffic calming schemes at every site reported to us due to financial pressures so we have to prioritise where we put these measures to make sure that the most dangerous sites are dealt with first.

“There is strict criteria to determine where road safety improvements are introduced and I’m sure local people would agree that roads where serious accidents occur have to take priority.

“Much work is taking place to reduce the number of road casualties on Trafford’s roads and to reduce road congestion in the borough. The council will assess Glebelands Road.”
