THIRTY-SIX residents on Thorley Drive, a cul-de-sac consisting of 17 houses in Timperley, have signed and sent a petition to the council detailing concerns about its junction with Thorley Lane.

Alan Coombs said: “The traffic speeds along the lane and we just have to edge out of our road and hope for the best. I’m afraid there’ll be a serious accident one of these days. It needs to be made safer and we would like traffic calming measures here.”

Matt Flukes, who has lived on Gladstone Road, Altrincham, for the past four years raised concerns about its junction with Navigation Road and its proximity with the primary school.

He said: “As you can imagine the road is busy with kids going to and from school. Our road is also a main cut through for people trying to get to the Metro. Cars fly through at 40 to 60mph and I can’t believe the council don’t have speed bumps in such an area yet there are some on around the corner, which is not a main route or cut through.

“I fear it’s only a matter of time before something bad happens with all the young children going to school and with the amount of pedestrians.”

Peter Yeoman, of Weldon Road, reported problems at the junction joining Weldon and Oldfield roads near John Leigh Park, Altrincham.

He said: “This is an accident waiting to happen, especially for those who have to turn right out of Weldon Road on to Oldfield Road. I have to do this on my bicycle and always feel insecure as I make this turn, my heart’s always in my mouth! I think that a roundabout, similar to the one at the end of Highgate Road, would slow the traffic down.”

Executive councillor Alan Mitchell said: “The safety of all road users is of paramount importance to us and we take the concerns of local people extremely seriously.

“We’re always happy to discuss road safety issues with residents and, in addition to contacting us by letter or over the telephone, our staff are available at the regular neighbourhood forum meetings to talk to people face-to-face.

“Unfortunately we can’t implement traffic calming schemes at every site reported to us due to financial pressures so we have to prioritise where we put these measures to make sure the most dangerous sites are dealt with first.

“There is strict criteria to determine where road safety improvements are introduced and I’m sure people would agree that roads where serious accidents occur have to take priority.”
