A MUM is campaigning for traffic calming measures on a Bowdon road after her teenage daughter was in a serious car crash.

Kath Brickell’s daughter,Ellen, 18, crashed her car at a bend on Langham Road, at its junction with South Downs Road, two weeks ago.

Since then Kath has asked the council to install either speed bumps, cameras or antiskid tarmac on a section of road she believes is notoriously dangerous.

Kath, of Hendham Drive, Altrincham, said: “There have been a lot of accidents on this stretch of road and I want to raise awareness of that. I nearly lost my daughter and I now feel I have to do something to stop someone losing their life on that bend in future.”

The 48-year-old added: “The council said the bend qualified for traffic calming measures but nothing has been done. Are they waiting for a fatality?”

Ellen’s accident happened as she was on her way to her Saturday job in Lymm. A sudden downpour caused her to lose control of the road and she veered into a post.

It took the emergency services 90 minutes to cut Ellen out of her car.

Kath said: “Ellen can’t remember the accident as she suffered a head injury. She also dislocated her hip and had to spend two weeks in hospital. She was supposed to take her A-levels this summer but has been advised not to.

“She’s a lucky girl and will make a good recovery but it could have been more serious.”

Residents in nearby houses have recorded dozens of incidents since 1996 in which cars and even buses have ploughed into gate posts and drives.

Peter Lazenby, of Langham Road, said: “This is probably the most frequent site of road accidents in Trafford. The bend is dangerous and badly cambered. We’ve had accident after accident. The council has a duty of care to pedestrians, motorists and residents.”

Neighbour Bruce Dagley recalled a bus going into his garden, three cars shunting into his wall and two into his gate post, causing thousands of pounds worth of damage.

He said: “This campiagn had been running out of steam because it had been going on for so long. A speed activated sign is the one thing we were able to achieve about two years ago but frankly it’s not effective enough.

“If we could meet with the council we could try to agree on the best solution.”

John Lamb, director of environment strategy said: “We are aware of the issue on Langham Road and are working to tackle it. There has historically been a problem with motorists speeding along this section of road, and this has resulted in a number of accidents.

“However, in the majority of cases, while these may have caused damage to property, nobody has been seriously injured, which means the road has not been prioritised for traffic calming measures as highly as others in the borough.

"However, we do take road safety in Trafford extremely seriously and, in response to the concerns of local people, we have already introduced flashing signs along this section of road to remind motorists not to speed.

“The road is scheduled for resurfacing in the summer which will make it more skid resistant, and we are planning an exercise to further monitor the speed of vehicles travelling along the road."

“In terms of speed cameras, any new sites are required to meet strict criteria and are assessed by the Speed Camera Partnership, a unit comprising GMP and councils.”
