A SALE woman who’s been involved in girl-guiding for 30 years has been given one of the highest awards possible.

Judith Glenn, who’s been volunteering with the movement since 1979, was presented with a Laurel Award for outstanding service.

Trafford’s former district commissioner currently has her own guide group in Sale, and also trains young guides to become leaders. She’s been a leader in Blackpool, Durham, and Debyshire in the past, before coming to Sale in 1988.

Last year Judith, 48, played a key role in the planning of Greater Manchester West Guide’s 21st birthday celebrations at Manchester’s Museum for Science and Industry, which was attended by almost 2,000 members from across the county.

Judith was nominated for the award by fellow colleagues who wrote letters saying why they believed Judith should be a considered recipient.

“It was a complete surprise for me,” Judith said. “It had been kept quiet for some time, as the nominations actually went in in November.

“It’s quite a high award too so I was very pleased to get it.

“The letters of recommendation included two from former guides who were in my unit from the age of 10 and now run their own guide units in Sale. There was also one from the head teacher of Tyntesfield Primary School in recognition of the voluntary work that I have undertaken there over the past few years, teaching years 5 and 6 Latin.

“I enjoy guiding a lot, and where ever I’ve done it I’ve always got on really well with the other people involved. In fact, I’m still in touch with the woman who was my first guide leader when I was young.”
