TEN years after a Hale pensioner was diagnosed with breast cancer, she became determined to make every day count.

Janice Moss, 64, found out she had the disease in 1996 and after treatment at the specialist cancer centre, the Christie, she went into remission early in 1997.

The mum-of-two, who has been married to husband John for 41 years, has been an active fundraiser with the Altrincham and Sale Fundraising group ever since.

The Christie has an annual budget of £160m, £13m of which comes from donations and fundraisers like Janice through the Christie charity.

The retired secretary said: “The Christie saved my life. If it wasn’t for the expert care and treatment I received I wouldn’t have seen my two sons get married and give me four wonderful grandchildren.

“What impressed me the most is how you’re treated like an individual and not just another patient on the ward. Being diagnosed with cancer means that you truly appreciate what’s important in life and you don’t take anything or any day for granted.

“Ever since I was treated for the disease, I’ve been determined to give something back and to help other cancer patients. I’m so passionate about the cause – I’d even consider doing an abseil! Our group have so far raised over £400,000 for The Christie and we’re now focusing our efforts on its new £35m patient treatment centre, which will be home to the largest early clinical trials unit in the world.”

Janice’s latest fundraising endeavour, which has so far raised more than £70,000, is a Morecambe Bay Walk on July 18.

The eight-mile challenge with the Queen’s official guide sees participants braving the elements in the three-and-a-half hour trek, which has been described as one of the world’s most wonderful journeys.

Janice, who also works as a Christie volunteer, added: “The day can often be wet and muddy at times as you trek through river channels and over sands – but if I can do it, anyone can and the day’s great fun! My sister, Christine, is even coming over from Atlanta to take part!”
