Thirteen members of Timperley Civic Society visited the gardens at Quarry Bank Mill on Wednesday 10th June 2009.

The gardens were originally planted by Samuel Greg, who built a house at Style, preferring to live there than in smoky Manchester. The house itself is not currently open to the public but a great deal of work, mainly done by volunteers, has gone into clearing the garden which had become completely overgrow as a result of not having been tended for many, many years.

We saw a wide variety of plants including a number of Rhododendrons imported by Greg from the Far East and the famous beech tree of unknown age but it must be several hundred years old.

Wandering around the paths we had some stunning views of the mill, the house, and the woodland.

The tour should have been guided by the Head Gardener but unfortunately he was called away and so he was substituted by 2 lady volunteers who kindly stepped into the breech.

We had a lovely afternoon capped off by some with a refreshing cup of tea in the restaurant and the forecast rain held off until just as we were leaving.
