TWO brothers from Urmston were thrilled by a double award scoop after they wrote and directed a short film.

Gary, 37, and Steve Looker, 36, attended the Limelight Film and Arts Awards, in London, and took home gongs for Best Drama and Best Film of the Night.

Talking about the awards and Limelight, which provides a platform for upcoming film makers to showcase their talent, Gary, of Bromley Avenue said: “We were humbled by it. We’re two guys from Manchester who were lucky enough to have such a great opportunity.

“Our aim was to make a film that would engage the viewer and give the audience an amazing experience.”

Steve, of Broadway, has been making amateur films for 15 years and decided to work with Gary, a writer, on a 10-minute short that could showcase their abilities.

The brothers approached production company, Binary Films, based in Didsbury, with a short film idea and worked at bringing together talent from the north west to make it, with a budget of less than £1,000.

These included actors David Crellin, who plays Emmerdale’s Billy Hopwood, Sean Cernow, who played a drug dealer in Coronation Street, and James Atkinson, who has so far played bit parts.

Steve said: “The project started 18 months ago and we felt that we wanted to make a statement with this film, so Gary wrote a script about hoodies and knives.

“We put our all into it. No one got paid but everyone came together and made what we feel is a fantastic film.”

The film, a social commentary called Sacrifice, was sent out to festivals both in the UK and internationally and is about a gang of youths that break into a warehouse.

The protagonists find themselves catapulted into a life or death situation, forcing a security guard to put past guilt into good use.

Gary and Steve hope the film will get publicly aired at either Scotland’s Edinburgh Festival or the Sundance Festival in the USA.

Their prize from Limelight was £3,000 worth of equipment and resources for their next project.

Now the duo plan to develop some feature film scripts, including a Hitchcock-style thriller.
