AN Altrincham clothing retailer is to stop sourcing from Burma after campaigners launched a boycott on it.

The Burma Campaign UK, which aims to restore human rights and democracy in the country, called for consumers not to buy from Cotton Traders and the Atlantic Street company agreed to change its policy.

Burma Campaign UK campaigns officer Johnny Chatterton welcomed this decision. He said: "Cotton Traders have made the right decision and pulled out of Burma. However, they should never have been in the country at all. By sourcing clothes from Burma they have helped to fund a dictatorship that uses rape, torture and murder to oppress its own people.”

The campaign group launched a public boycott against the retailer on October 15 after a Burma Campaign UK investigation revealed that Cotton Traders were sourcing clothes from Burma.

Cotton Traders, which was founded in 1987 by former England rugby captains Fran Cotton and Steve Smith, notified the campaign on October 17 that it would no longer source clothes from there.

Product director for Cotton Traders, Paul Hawkins, said: "No new styles will be placed in Burma and as such Cotton Traders has ceased to source products from Burma."

Mr Chatterton warned investigations will be carried out on other retailers who have not disclosed whether or not they source from Burma.
