The Messenger asked for a statement with no response but at the time a spokesperson said it was "to focus investment in individual stores". They said there were no proposed redundancies due to the proposed redeployment of staff.

The Mall is under development with the work on King Street and Kingsway already underway and in line for completion this year.

The work on another phase, including the work on up to 800 homes, is in the pipeline as the developer awaits planning permission.

Developer Bruntwood's Head of Retail, James Tootle, said: "As part of Boots' national store closure plan, which will see 300 stores close across the country, its branch in Stretford Town Centre will close from March 2.

"We are currently in talks with other pharmacy brands to be part of the new high street offering here in Stretford and we will share updates as soon as we can. In the meantime the community can access a pharmacy offering at Harry's Pharmacy, 92 Mitford Street, Stretford, M32 8AQ as well as Aldi and Quality Save for beauty products."

Other Boots branches are available at Golden Way, Urmston; Stanley Square, Sale; George Richards Way, Altrincham as well as at Trafford Centre and Trafford Retail Park.
