An "intoxicated" man has been arrested for a public order offence while he was travelling to Sale on the tram.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) shared on their Trafford North Facebook page in the early hours of this morning (Thursday, January 4) that they had arrested the man yesterday (January 3).

Police were contacted by a member of the public who alerted them to the man who was on the Metrolink heading towards Sale.

The post read: "Yesterday (03/01/24) with the help of members of the public, officers from #GMPTransportUnit have arrested an intoxicated male for a public order offence whilst travelling on the Metrolink towards Sale.

"We would like to thank the member of the public for assisting and contacting the police. Working together we can do more #TfGM."

Meanwhile, at nearby Cornbrook tram stop, four young people were also arrested yesterday for possession of bladed articles, possession with intent to supply and conspiracy to commit robbery.

The juveniles are believed to have links to local organised crime groups linked to a series of violent offences and were arrested after a mixture of covert and overt tactics, according to police.

Officers also seized three large knives and ballistic grade body armour.

Sergeant Andrew Dixon from GMP Transport Unit said: “This was an excellent recovery by our officers who are patrolling day and night across Greater Manchester’s Transport Network to detect and disrupt organised crime, ensuring commuters and residents are safe.

“We will continue to proactively target anyone suspected of carrying weapons. The risks that they poise to our communities mean that we will take a zero-tolerance approach, if you are caught carrying a knife, you will be arrested.

"Finally, if you do see an incident on the transport network - or something doesn't feel right - please report it to us and we'll handle it. There are numerous ways that you can make a report either via our website or calling 101. Always dial 999 in an emergency.”
