A scrap metal firm in Altrincham has raised tens of thousands of pounds in its effort to assist war-torn Ukraine - and will be donating a convoy of four ambulances.

Scrap metal processors, J Davidson, has been working hard to raise sums to support Ukraine and has been collecting donations from local businesses.

The team managed to raise an impressive £35,000 which has gone towards purchasing a convoy of four former NHS ambulances.

The volunteers from Greater Manchester Businesses have also been looking to drive the ambulances part of the way to Ukraine.

Setting off last Tuesday (February 28), the group planned to complete the 1,250-mile journey in three days.

The route for the ambulances will see them driven via Dover to Calais, through Belgium, Netherlands and Germany before being handed over to supporting charities in Poland.

It is then anticipated the vehicles with be taken to hotspot areas of combat, such as Kyiv, Lviv, Kharkiv, Rivne and Chernihiv.

Volunteer lead, Nathan Evans, said: “It’s been a year since the invasion in Ukraine and support is still require.

"There are so many people suffering over there.

"The ambulances don’t just provide first aid and medical supplies, they are often the only means of transportation for the evacuation of innocent civilians.”

He added: “We can’t thank J Davidson and everyone else involved enough for their contribution and for allowing us to make this happen.”

Jamie Davidson, J Davidson managing director, added: “We think Nathan and his team are incredible.

"It’s so commendable what they have set out to achieve and it’s a pleasure to support them.”
