Calls for a general election are on the rise after the resignation of Liz Truss and the appointment of Rishi Sunak as successor.

Politicians such as MPs Kate Green and Mike Kane are in support of a trip to the polls, as is a significant section of the public.

Here in Trafford, around 5,000 people across the area's constituencies signed a petition to add to the calls for a general election as of midday on Monday.

Any petition with more than 100,000 signatures, a milestone which this example surpassed by eight times, earns a discussion in the House of Commons.

This was last week, albeit before the resignation of Liz Truss and the appointment of Rishi Sunak as successor, and the Conservative Government shut down the idea as 'the last thing we need'.

But although a trip to the polls is not at all guaranteed, The Messenger took a look at what the outcome would be if it happened.

Altrincham and Sale West

Sir Graham Brady has been the MP for Altrincham and Sale West for 15 years, and he has received around 50 per cent of the votes in successive elections.

But according to Election Maps UK's Nowcast, which is based on both national and regional polls, he would lose the seat to the Labour Party as it stands.

Stretford and Urmston

Kate Green has been the MP for Stretford and Urmston since 2010, although she has told of her intention to step down at the next elections, whenever this is.

In spite of this the seat, which is to be contested instead by leader of Trafford Council Andrew Western, seems to be safe for the Labour Party as it stands. In fact, an increase in majority is likely.

Wythenshawe and Sale East

Mike Kane has been the MP for Wythenshawe and Sale East for eight years since the death of the late Paul Goggins.

Here too the seat seems to be safe for the Labour Party as it stands, and another increase in majority is on the cards.
