Timperley Civic Society is concerned about a Planning Application which has been made for a change of use for the premises at 395/395a, Stockport Road - the CO-OP store near the library.

The Application is for a change of use from category A1 Retail to category A4 Drinking Establishment, the application is being made by the Barracuda Group who own the Barracuda Sports Bar and Night Club in Altrincham. To view the application click on the link to Trafford Planning number H/69040

Although not explicitly stated in the application, it is reasonable to assume that the purpose to which this building will be put will be of a similar nature to the existing establishment in Altrincham i.e. a late night drinking venue and night club aimed mainly at a younger clientele.

The Civic Society feels that such an establishment would be detrimental to Timperley for a number of reasons:

An establishment of this nature is totally inappropriate for the location being within 50yards of 2 residential complexes for the elderly, one of which, Orchard Court is a sheltered housing complex for the elderly and infirm, the other a private, McCarthy and Stone, retirement apartment block is directly opposite the proposed location across Stockport Road. The right of these residents to a tranquil life is likely to be severely restricted if the proposal is accepted.

As has been previously reported in the Messenger vandalism is already a problem in Timperley and an additional drinking establishment can only exacerbate the problem, especially as the proposed establishment is likely to remain open until the early hours of the morning.

There are already 2 public houses within Timperley village, one of which is less than 100yards from the proposed new establishment and thus there is no need for another Bar.

Timperley Civic Society has already written to Trafford Borough Council to oppose the granting of this Planning Application.

It is suggested that if other people feel the same way they should also write to the Planning and Building Control Department at Sale Town Hall
