Three substations in Stretford and Urmston are set to receive a makeover as a part of a campaign by Electricity North West.

The operator's Transforming Our Spaces campaign started three years ago, and has since seen more than 30 substations across the region transformed.

Next are three substations in Stretford and Urmston, on Sandy Lane, Elm Drive and Cheriton Road, which are all on a list of 10 chosen by the operator.

The others are in Manchester, Salford, Tameside and Wigan, with all locations chosen due to issues such as vandalism.

In attempt to solve some of the issues, engineers will install planters, bird feeders and bug hotels.

Work on some locations has started already, and flowers will appear from as soon as this summer.

Ryan Wilson, who is in charge of the campaign by Electricity North West, said: "Transforming Our Spaces is a really exciting project which I’m delighted has returned for another year.

"The projects we carry out have a real positive impact on the community and the feedback we’ve received is fantastic.

"The teams are well underway with clearing and transforming the sites and we all can’t wait to see the completed projects later in the summer."

The operator is expected to announce another 10 substations later in 2022.

Mr Wilson added: "Substations aren’t always aesthetically pleasing, but they’re critical parts of the network.

"We regularly maintain all of our sites, which involves weeding and cleaning, but Transforming Our Spaces takes everything to the next level.

"I’m over the moon we’re carrying out 20 projects throughout the year. The feedback from local communities has been brilliant and that’s led to us expanding the scheme to continue revamping land around substations in the region."
