MESSENGER reader, Caroline Davies has celebrated her 100th birthday today.

Staff, residents and families of Wyncourt Nursing Home in Timperley gathered together for a tea party to celebrate her centenary.

She has lived at the nursing home for five and a half years and Mrs Davies is only the fifth resident they can remember to have turned 100.

She grew up in Kings Road in Stretford before her family had to move when a fire bomb came through their roof. It blew out their front and back door and all of the windows.

She then moved to Gerrard Avenue in Timperley with her mum, dad, older sister Beatrice and younger sister Hilda.

The three sisters used to make clothes as a hobby and Hilda had a stall on Bury market to sell them, although still always used to pinch Caroline's clothes.

She also used to love riding her bike which she says is her secret to longevity.

Mrs Davies was married to Jim Davies for 50 years before he died several years ago when he was in his 90's from a heart condition.

She said: "I met him when I used to go out to the cinema and he used to ride home from his work on his bike. We always used to wish each other good night and one day he got off his bike and asked me if I wanted to go out for a drink."

In her working life, Caroline worked a lot in engineering. She was taught to weld where she had an accident and suffered from a serious burn on her arm. She worked for several companies in Trafford such as Metrovicks and Kellogg's.
