THE speed limit on Chester Road has been reduced to 30mph from 40mph in Stretford - and work to add an extra lane at the problematic Edge Lane junction will begin next month.

The council has announced that work on phase one of the Stretford movement and public realm improvements is due to start on April 18.

A new speed limit has already been put in place on Chester Road, with the 30mph limit extended from Gorse Hill to the M60 motorway junction.

The council said this is to improve public safety and that further signage will be in place by the end of March.

An extra right turning lane will be also added for the Chester Road junction with Edge Lane.  Cars are often backed up to the gyratory from the junction, causing traffic disruption, particularly in rush hour.

Other works include the closure of three subways underneath Chester Road, Kingsway and Edge Lane; a new pedestrian crossing and upgraded traffic signals; improvements to the Stretford Mall entrance from Chester Road; new landscaped areas and public green space.

Cllr Brian Shaw, deputy executive member for economic growth, environment and infrastructure, said: “Securing the successful regeneration of Stretford Town Centre is a key priority for Trafford Council. The Stretford Town Centre Masterplan identified the need for a comprehensive public realm and movement scheme that will make Stretford a more attractive and successful town centre.

“Local concerns and comments have been listened to and built into the design and I’m excited to see the start of the works. Whilst the overall implementation of the public realm phases will take place over several years, these initial works will enable Stretford town centre to start to maximise benefits from public and private sector investment and attract investor, developer and end user interest.”

Contractors AE Yates will be on site from April until October.

By the end of phase one, the council will determine if motorists are adhering to the 30mph speed limit – if not, further measures may be put in place.
