POLICE have issued a warning after Trafford residents were the target of a HM Revenue and Custom scam.

Officers said that several people in Trafford have received calls from fraudsters purporting to be from tax, payments and customs authority.

The callers claim that HMRC are issuing a court claim against an unspecified resident and request that the receiver press ‘1’ on the phone to speak to their case officer.

On its Facebook page, GMP Trafford South warned: “This is a scam aimed at obtaining personal details and persuading residents to pay fictional debts. Do not reply to the message.

“Remember; if you cannot verify the identity of a caller you should not disclose any personal information.

“Please share this information with friends, relatives and neighbours.”

To report a fraud, call Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040.
