AN Altrincham man has become a great grandfather at the age of just 57 – and great, great granny is only 79.

Barry Bates’ grandson Cameron Bates welcomed his twin girls Scarlett Rose Rock Bates and Isabelle May Rock Bates into the world on December 8 2016.

And the birth could make Barry the youngest great grandfather in the town.

He said: "I am over the moon to be a great grandad aged 57 of not one but two gorgeous precious twin girls. This is a special occasion for me and all my family."

And paternal great granny Susan Mucleod, originally from Hale but now living in Oldham, is just 55 years old.

Last week, all five generations were together for the first time.

New parents Cameron, 23, and Caroline Rock, 23, took the girls to see Barry, his mum, Jean Morton, who has become a great, great grandmother aged 79, and Barry’s daughter (Cameron’s mum) Julie Bates, who is a grandmother at just 39.

Barry's father - the twins' great, great grandfather - Bill Bates, of Warrington, is the grand old age of 80.

Granny Julie said: "I am honoured to be a nana at the age of 39. I am so proud of Cameron and Caroline for being fantastic parents. It is so special and I feel so happy that we are able to say we are a fifth generation family.”

And mum and dad are proud to be carrying on the family tradition.

"This is a very special time in our lives and we are blessed and delighted to have our beautiful twin daughters,” said Cameron. “We are proud to be part of such a large family.”
