MIKE Kane MP has quit the shadow cabinet.

The Wythenshawe and Sale East MP announced his resignation as Shadow International Development Minister on Twitter last night.

Mr Kane tweeted: “30 years a member @UKLabour - proud to have served but have tonight resigned as Shadow International Development Minister.”

He is one of a string of Labour MPs to step down in the wake of the EU referendum Leave result.

In the past 48 hours, Jeremy Corbyn has lost two thirds of his cabinet and seen more than 40 of his MPs revolt against his leadership in what is being dubbed a ‘Labour Crisis’.

Critical party members called for Mr Corbyn's to step down on Monday after his 'lacklustre' performance in the EU referendum but he refused.

Mr Kane joins Kate Green, MP for Stretford and Urmston, who announced her resignation as Shadow Minister for Women and Equalities yesterday.

In her letter of resignation addressed to Mr Corbyn, Ms Green said: "I am sorry that you did not appear to accept the special responsibilities on you as leader to take all steps pssible to unite us so that we act now as an effective opposition in parliament and, in anticipation of a general election, which the people whom we represent so desperately need Labour to win."

Reaction to the Trafford MPs resignations has got a mixed response on Twitter.

Some have branded the move 'child-like' and 'selfish'.

Other praised the decision, thanking the MPs for taking a stand.
