AN Urmston girl boosted a charity by completing a solo kayak island hop around all the 11 major islands of Derwentwater.

Megan Auld from has been kayaking for a couple of years and decided to take on this personal challenge after she lost her dad to a brain tumour when she was just 12 years old, in 2010.

In her Dad’s final days, he was looked after by Marie Curie nurses at home.

Megan, 17, wanted to do something for Marie Curie to say 'thank you' for looking after her father, and supporting herself and her mother during this very sad time.

It took Megan a couple of hours to complete her demanding challenge, but she has raised an £490 in aid of Marie Curie. This money will provide an additional 25 hours nursing care for a family in a similar position to Megan’s.

Lynn Partridge, community fundraiser for the charity, said ‘This is a fantastic achievement by Megan and I’m sure her dad would have been very proud. The money raised by Megan will help us provide vital care and support to people living with a terminal illness, and their families.”
