TRAFFORD Council is holding a series of information events in the borough to promote this year's Foster Care Fortnight.

The two week period between June 1-14 aims to raise awareness of the continual need for new foster carers to come forward.

This year, the council is asking local residents to remember who supported them when they were growing up – from lighting their birthday cake candles to teaching them to drive.

“Doing this will help them understand how difficult it must be for young people who do not have those experiences, through no fault of their own,” explained a council spokesman.

“Giving those without that support the chance to once again share special moments with someone who cares is at the heart of being a foster carer.

“There are many myths about who can and can't foster but what really matters is that someone has the commitment, skills and ability to look after children separated from their own families, and to offer them a stable and secure home during their time of need.”

During the fortnight, it is hoped to get people thinking more about whether they may have what it takes to offer the care, love and support needed by the next generation.

There is currently a particular need for foster carers to look after larger sibling groups and older children.

Executive councillor for children's services, councillor Michael Hyman, said: "Knowing that you are making a positive difference to another person's life during a crisis is a huge thing.

“Foster carers come from all backgrounds and experiences, all with one thing in common, the skill and desire to be a positive influence.”

Jackie Sanders, director of The Fostering Network, added: “As each year passes, we see more and more children coming into care.

“We need people who can open their heart, and their homes, to vulnerable children and young people who need support in reaching their full potential.”
