POLICE said they will study video evidence from Old Trafford after a number of Manchester City fans were ejected from the derby for offensive behaviour relating to the Munich air disaster.

Manchester United beat their cross town rivals with a resounding 4-2 win on Sunday afternoon, putting the Red Devils in a strong position to qualify for next year’s Champions League.

But police confirmed they had become involved after blues fans were removed from the ground.

A video has emerged online featuring City supporters appearing to sing about the Munich Air Disaster outside Old Trafford.

A police spokesman said: “During Sunday's derby match between Manchester United and Manchester City, a handful of people were ejected by the stewards for making offensive gestures and remarks relating to the Munich air disaster.

“Greater Manchester Police and the two clubs will now be examining video evidence from the fixture to see whether further action is necessary.

“GMP would like to again stress that the overwhelming majority of fans in attendance behaved impeccably but any reports of offensive chanting, gestures or remarks will be investigated by officers to establish whether any criminal offences have taken place.”

23 people, including eight United players and three of the club’s staff, died following the 1958 Munich Air Disaster, when a plane carrying the United team stopped to refuel on the way back from their match against Red Star Belgrade.
