OFFROAD dirt bike riders caused chaos on the streets of Trafford yesterday following a tribute to murdered motorcycle enthusiast, Clarence ‘Clay’ Edwards.

A video has emerged online showing a large congregation of motorcyclists performing wheelies, riding on pavements and performing tyre burnouts.

It’s believed the video shows riders gathering ahead of the funeral of Clarence Edwards, a motorbike enthusiast who died after being stabbed in Manchester City Centre on Sunday, January 4.

Dozens of motorbikes congregated at Southern Cemetery in Chorlton at around 2.50pm.

As riders dispersed, the police helicopter was scrambled to deal with numerous reports of bikers riding in an antisocial manner across Manchester, including many in Trafford.

One Messenger reader said the riders later caused ‘chaos’ around Carrington and Urmston at 3.30pm.

“None of the bikes had license plates and their faces were covered,” they said.

“Riders were riding deliberately on the wrong side of the road at oncoming traffic like maniacs closely followed by a police copter.”

A police spokesman said: “On the afternoon of Thursday 5 February 2015, GMP received several reports that a large number of people were riding illegal off road bikes dangerously in parts of south Manchester and Trafford.

“GMP deployed officers from the Intercept unit and Roads Policing Teams in an attempt to stop and seize the bikes, riders of which were monitored by the police helicopter.

“Five men, aged 18, 24, 24 and 25, have been arrested for a number of offences including theft, dangerous driving and public order offences and six bikes have been seized.”

Chief Inspector Mark Dexter, added: “This incident was particularly difficult to deal with, the speed and manoeuvrability of the group combined with the heavy traffic made stopping the group very challenging.

“With support from the National Police Air Service we were able to coordinate ground patrols and, using a range of tactics, intercept and disable the bikes.

“These individuals caused chaos and danger on the roads and we used all the tactics available to us to stop them as quickly as possible.

“We have made a number of arrests and seized a number of the bikes and will continue to review video footage with a view to identifying and prosecuting those who were involved."

Despite arrests, no-one has yet been charged with the murder of Mr Edwards.
