A HOSPITAL is set to benefit twice over after a series of fundraising efforts by the landlord and some of the regulars at Urmston pub The Lord Nelson.

Affectionately known as 'the Nelly', an auction at the weekend saw the pub smash through its £20,000 target and taking its total to £20,450.

The total raised will be doubled by brewery owner Joseph Holt, which is pledged to raise £300,000 for the Christie Hospital to enable it to build a new integrated procedures unit for cancer patients.

To raise the money landlord Ian Slamon and pub goers have participated in a series of challenges including the 3 Peaks 24 hour effort, the Greater Manchester Swim and climbing to the top of Africa's highest mountain Kilimanjaro, last October.

Ian said: "Our final total is £20,450, which will be doubled by Joseph Holt, making £40,900.

"On top of this we have more than £4,000 of Gift Aid to add, making the grand total more than £45,000 going to the Christie. On behalf of Julie and myself, I would like to say thanks to all our wonderful customers, we really appreciate your efforts."
