AN Altrincham film club has won the equivalent of an Oscar for a short film which caught the attention of judges in a national competition.

Altrincham Video Society was pitched in a competition involving clubs in the North versus those in the South, and was judged at weekend as the best for a 15 minute comedy about a henpecked husband and his pals.

The film Imbuvable Feu, was based on this year's overall competition theme of 'If', which in the case of its main character Eric(Eric Flowers), is more a case of 'what if', as the downtrodden man realises how different his life might have been without his domineering wife Vera (Myra Ranson).

Society chairman Eric Flowers said: "Over the years we have won many film accolades including this particular one in years gone by but despite this when our members heard they had won they were ecstatic."

Society vice-chairman Chris Slater, who plays one of Eric's pals, after writing the script, said “I have never written a script before and initially found the project a little daunting, but the support and knowledge of everyone involved in the making of this film has really inspired me.

"Seeing my original vision translate from paper to the finished movie has been a truly wonderful experience and something I hope to do many more times in the years to come."

The forerunner to the society Altrincham Cine Club was first established in1967. However, with the advent of video the members voted for a name change in 1998 to Altrincham Video Society.

Today, the membership of 25 works entirely in video and on producing well shot and edited movies for the enjoyment of its members and outside audiences.

Since those days, the society has gone on to win many awards both at home and abroad, including the USA, Canada and Australia.

The society has its own 65 seat clubroom/cinema in the Timperley Community Association building at 121 Park Road, Timperley.

The society is always on the lookout for youngsters keen to learn how to become a filmmaker at 7.45pm every Wednesday. For more information telephone 973 9344.
