TWO intrepid mobile phone store bosses are taking to the road later this month for a Top Gear-style challenge to raise cash for a children’s charity.

While 34-year-old Gary Woodward, manager of the 02 shop in Stretford Mall, makes an 80-mile return trip on his motorbike between the shopping centre and Sheffield, his assistant manager, Aadil Riaz, 27, will attempt to beat his overall time by doing a 30-mile return journey to the 02 shop in Clarendon Square, Hyde on his pedal cycle.

By pitting horsepower against pedal power, the dynamic duo aim to raise at least a couple of hundred pounds in sponsorship money for Cash for Kids, a network of local charities linked to Bauer radio stations, including Greater Manchester’s Key 103, which lends a helping hand to disabled and disadvantaged children aged up to 18.

Gary, who lives in Northwich and has been in charge of the 02 branch for the past month, said: “While I’m a pretty keen motorcyclist, Aadil is a cycling enthusiast, so we worked out a challenge which is a bit like the ones they do on Top Gear where we try to do our respective routes on different machines in the fastest time.

Gary added: "Cash for Kids is a very good charity which gives everything raised locally back to good causes in the community where it is collected, so I’m hoping we can make as much money from our challenge as possible - at least £200.”

“Of course, as my bike goes faster than his because it has an engine, I’ll be going 50 miles further than Aadil."

His co-challenger Aadil, lives in Rusholme and worked at various 02 branches before coming to the Stretford Mall 02 six weeks ago.

He said: “I ride the four and a half miles into work every day on two wheels and I’m really proud of my bike which is a proper road-going racer with six gears.

“Gary and I came up with the idea of this challenge after chatting together but it’s not a race and we’ll just be seeing who can achieve the fastest time for their return trip."
