TEENAGERS from Trafford got an in depth taster of the creative arts at London's Tate Modern.

Wezli Brown, 15, Mohammed Amir, 17 and Hassan Qazi, 18, from the youth support charity Trafford Rathbone, visited the gallery and spoke to the Tate collective, a youth group encouraging young people to share and discuss art.

The trip was organised in partnership with Whitworth Art Gallery of Manchester as part of a project to engage more young people with arts, filming, music, events and creative careers.

The teenagers also met the creative director of Tate Britain who held a question and answer session with them, saw the collective’s multimedia exhibits and an exhibition of Matisse's paintings.

Mohammed Amir said: “I didn’t think I’d be bothered about going to an art gallery but when I went I was surprised. There is a lot more to art than old paintings, there was music, graphics and videos and lots of people there from my generation that spoke to me, I think there is something in there for everyone.”

Cheryl Hunt, tutor of functional skills said: “Our partnership with Whitworth Art Gallery is a major part of our wider efforts at Rathbone Trafford to build links with other agencies and offer young people the chance to explore creative arts and music opportunities.

“The trip was a great success and I hope we can organise a range of similar events for learners keen on a career in creative arts in the future.”
