TOYS R US in Altrincham Retail Park is set to close.

Signs stating the George Richards Way store is to close its doors on February 9 have gone up at the toy outlet, which also direct customers to its nearest stores in Warrington, Manchester and Stockport.

Messenger has contacted Toys R Us and is awaiting an official statement.

However, the retailer did tweet reporter Kate Banks: “@toysrusuk: @MessengerKB Hi Kate. Sometimes it is necessary to close stores and we are always looking for new opportunities to open new ones. Thanks.”

A reader who does not wish to be named said: “It will be interesting to know what their management have to say about a big toy retailer opening up, effectively closing down all the independents and then pulling out again.

“Also, that's a pretty big centrepiece unit in the retail park which will be empty and with the potential loss of the Asda home store when the big new Asda opens up down the road.”

Can't say I'm surprised, to be honest. The stock rotation in this store was shockingly bad - constantly had the previous season's items all over the place and rarely had new items on the shelves in time for their official street dates. I hope Smyths or The Entertainer see an opportunity here as for many people I know that was the sole reason they would be going to Broadheath Retail Park.

Shame about the staff either being made redundant or having to travel long distances to another store. My first ever job as a 16 year old was at that store.
