SANTA Claus and 12 elves were evacuated from the Trafford Centre last week, after high winds played havoc with their Christmas Grotto.

Winds of up to 55mph were recorded battering the outdoor festive village at Barton Square on December 4, which also caused part of the Chill Factore’s roof to be blown off.

Health and safety experts at the centre made the decision to evacuate the area before it was reopened to the public, although several of the stores at Barton Square persevered and managed to trade throughout the day.

Said Richard Paxton: “Our first priority was for the safety of our customers and, of course, of Santa Claus.

“This meant we had to close the grotto, carousel and the festive stalls for the day, and we are truly sorry if this disappointed those guests who were making a special journey to see us.

“Thanks to the swift actions of our staff, the area was made safe and returned to normal as quickly as possible.

“Of course, we will honour all booked tickets for the day of the storm, and would ask anyone who missed out to contact the Grotto and re-book your place to meet the man himself.”
