THE life of ‘the Pennine’s most famous landscape artist’, Peter Brook, is being celebrated in a retrospective exhibition at Hale gallery Clark Art.

The gallery will display more than 80 original paintings from the Peter Brook estate from October 17 to November 5. The exhibition entitled ‘Peter Brook: Looking back at the Pennines’ showcases the largest collection of his paintings in a commercial exhibition in the UK.

Brook’s work captures the essence of the rural north, depicting a vanishing world through haunting snow scenes, agricultural landscapes, fields and farms.

His work has been held in some of the most prestigious galleries in the world.

Bill Clark, owner of Clark Art gallery, said: “Peter Brook is one of the north’s most important artists but his popularity spreads far beyond.

“His work is collected all over the world. His paintings record the changing landscape of the Pennines and its disintegrating economy. His distinctive, bleak country scenes, deserted farmhouses, derelict mills and lonely valleys are symbols of rural hardship.

“He enjoyed great commercial and critical success during his life and left behind a wonderful legacy, one I want to celebrate in this exhibition.”

  • Peter Brook – Looking back at the Pennines will be open for viewing between 10am and 5.30pm from Tuesday to Saturday at Clark Art gallery, 155 Ashley Road, Hale.
