SALE resident Mike Newman has claimed to have regained the blind land speed record - after reaching an average speed of 186 mph.

The 52-year-old former bank manager said he was ecstatic” after beating the speed of 182 mph set by Turkish pop singer Melin Senturk.

Mike achieved the feat at Brutingthorpe Proving Ground in Leicestershire on Monday.

Experts logged the speed he achieved and the data will be sent to the Guiness Book of Records for confirmation.

Speaking to the BBC’s website, he said: “I’ve worked hard today and I’ve enjoyed driving the car.

"This was challenging because the surface is very bumpy and you don’t realise how bumpy it is until you are going over it at such a speed.”

The Sale speed king received help from a navigator who conveyed information through a radio link and Mike took part in several dry runs on the day.

But the former Barclays business manager has no intention of sitting back and plans to attempt to smash the blind water speed record later this year, with the help of the team from Speed of Sight, the charity he founded.

If he achieves his goal, Mike will become the first blind person to hold the land and water speed records at the same time.

Speed of Sight aims to encourage more people with disabilities to get behind the wheel and take up motor sport.
