Charlie and the Chocolate Factory; Charlotte’s Web, Black Beauty, The Borrowers, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Spot the Dog, Stig of the Dump: some of the best loved children’s stories of all time – and all published by Puffin.

This year’s Winter Exhibition at Lyme Park, ‘There's Nuffin Like a Puffin’ is celebrating 70 years of Puffin books – and you can wander down a literary memory lane as titles from seven decades of children’s publishing are displayed along with Puffin ‘passports’, completed by authors such as Roald Dahl and Jill McDonald to prove that you were a ‘proper and pronounced Puffin author’!

Amy Green who’s organised the exhibition at Lyme says: “Artwork detailing the spines of every title every published by Puffin lines the walls of corridors around the Servants’ Hall here – so you can literally ‘read’ your way through the decades.

"The titles are a real conversation starter – people stop and reminisce about what they read when they were young – and what they’re reading to their own children.

"We’ve also got original artwork and illustrations for several of the books, including the story of Worzel Gummidge – the first story book published by Puffin in 1941.

"There are badges, Puffin annuals and original letters from authors. We’ve also recreated a ‘Borrowers’ room with a giant sized cotton reel and needle, a large chess set and tall cupboards – so you really feel quite small in there compared to everyday objects! There’s a ‘Stig of the Dump’ room where you can recreate Stig’s den with boxes and newspapers, whilst the Chapel is hosting Pery Jackson and Artemis Fowl.

"Mr Big’s Piano is in the Servants' Hall and the Very Hungary Caterpillar is busy in the Orangery – hopefully not eating too many of the plants!”

Book themed activities, storytelling and a Puffin trail around the garden keep children busy.

‘There's Nuffin Like a Puffin’ is open weekends and school holidays until 17 February 2013.

Please note that only rooms associated with the exhibition, ie the Servants’ Hall and Orangery are open. The rest of the house is closed until the start of the new season on February 25. The restaurant and shop are open on exhibition days, whilst the Timber Yard Coffee Shop, the estate and Crow Wood Playscape are open daily (closed Christmas Day).
