IT may have been the scene of some famous performances over the years, but I can't remember seeing many standing ovations at the Royal Exchange.

But its production of Little Shop of Horrors brought the audience to its feet on press night, roaring its approval after two hours of memorable musical fun.

The standing ovation was richly deserved as this is completely flawless in every respect. The cast sings its heart out, making the most of one of the most appealing scores around and lyrics that positively drip

with wit. It's not just the lyrics that stand out though - the dialogue is laugh out loud funny on numerous occasions.

I personally loved the scenes with the sadistic dentist Orin Scrivello, taking great pleasure in inflicting great pain on his patients. Ako Mitchell is very good value in the role and the laughing gas scene is perfectly played. So funny, in fact, my sides ached by the end of it.

Seymour Krelborn is working for a struggling skid row florist and comes up with a very novel idea to boost business. But it soon becomes clear that this loveable doormat has created a monster as the plant Audrey II takes some feeding.

If ever anyone was born to play this part its Gunnar Cauthery, conveying both the character's geeky charm and forging a great chemistry with Audrey, Seymour's love interest. Unlike her floral namesake, Audrey is a victim, while Audrey II has an insatiable appetite for victims. Kelly Price, who plays the role, does have a voice to die for though.

Not to mention Nuno Silva, who voices Audrey II, would be very wrong. He sounds amazing and his voice certainly doesn't match his appearance.

All in all, this is the complete musical package and I guarantee you'll leave the theatre on a high and

humming the very catchy songs. Fabulous, feel good fun.
