A COMPARATIVELY new choir, Cantus Bravura, will perform a concert at St Martin’s Church, Ashton-on-Mersey on Saturday, March 25 at 7.30 pm.

It is made up of a combination of Cantus, a youth choir formed 10 years ago by Daphne Sumbler when she retired as head of music at Sale Grammar School, and Bravura, an adult choir she created five years ago.

Daphne, their musical director, said: “Both, at different times, won first prize at Chester Festival, so I decided to combine them.”

The concert, entitled, Mothers, chosen with Mother's Day in mind, will include something for everyone both sacred and secular as well as musical theatre and folk music.

“There will be lullabies, including Swing Low Sweet Chariot, and other pieces about mothers. The mother of all mothers will be remembered in an extract from Holy Boy an oratorio by David J. Palmer."

Daphne also directs Choirs at Sea, an organisation which encourages cruise passengers to sing on board.

This is where she met David and Pam Hudson who have always lived abroad and are currently in Dubai.

“David came from Ashton-on-Mersey and when home, attended St. Martin’s, Ashton-on-Mersey. They asked us to perform there and are returning especially for the concert,” said Daphne.

Tickets, priced £5, are available from 0161 969 2805 or pay at door.
