STARSKY and Hutch star Paul Michael Glaser is a revelation in Fiddler On The Roof, playing the role of Tevye, the deposed patriarch with the formidable wife.

His days of chasing the bad guys through the mean streets of Bay City are way, way behind him now, but Glaser is perfect for a role immortalised on the big screen by the legendary Topol.

Tevye is a wonderful part and Glaser is particularly good at bringing out the comedy elements of the role. A very charismatic actor, as fans of the hugely popular TV show will testify, he ensures that you really warm to this larger than life character.

Strictly Come Dancing judge Craig Revel Horwood has directed and choreographed this production, currently playing at The Lowry, and his choreography definitely gets a nine out of ten from me.

Fiddler seems to have been around forever. However, in saying that the score sounds remarkably fresh, from classic showstoppers like If I Were A Rich Man to one of my personal favourites, Sunrise, Sunset.

The old ones are still the best as they say and this giant of a musical, funny and touching, is sure to be pulling in the crowds for many, many years to come. Enjoy. Rick Bowen * Until November 2. Tickets are available from 0843 208 6000. Star rating - ****
