A plan to create 26 homes by reshuffling several services between the towns of Sale and Stretford is set to be scrapped by Trafford Council.

The authority approved the reshuffle of Stretford Library, Trafford Music Service and Trafford Mental Health Home Treatment Team last year.

The plan to create 26 homes involved the relocation of Stretford Library to a site in Stretford Mall and the relocation of Trafford Music Service to the site on The Kingsway in its place. Currently, the service is in the Claremont Centre, which is not suitable for it to provide tuition to its students according to a report.

Once the centre was empty it was in line for a redevelopment of it and its surroundings, including the site of Trafford Mental Health Home Treatment Team, into a mixture of 18 apartments and eight houses.

However, the plan is set to be scrapped by Trafford Council, with a scaled-back scheme up for consideration by its executive next week.

The scaled-back scheme means the centre is to remain on Claremont Road whereas the site of Trafford Mental Health Home Treatment Team, on Chapel Road, is to be turned into a handful of homes only.

A report reads: "There are several constraints to the scheme as a whole, principally with the suitability of the Stretford Library site for Trafford Music Service (TMS), due to the condition of the Stretford Library site and the options to convert the premises being limited.

"In addition, there are increased construction costs from the original estimate, plus other constraints of converting the Claremont Centre are now known, which means a residential scheme would be unable to support the works to Stretford Library and Stretford Mall."

The report adds: "It is proposed to invest a portion of the value from the Chapel Road development into the Claremont Centre to ensure TMS can continue to operate in the medium term.

"The condition of the Claremont Centre means it is an unsuitable location for TMS in the long term. Work needs to be undertaken to source a suitable location for TMS in the long term."

The relocation of Stretford Library to a site in Stretford Mall remains a possibility but this is subject to an appraisal which is ongoing.
