A plan to turn two areas of a town into 'active neighbourhoods' is under consideration by Trafford Council.

The proposal aims to tackle issues such as congestion, pollution, problem parking and rat running in Urmston.

In the first of these neighbourhoods, bounded by Flixton Road to the east, Irlam Road to the north, Woodsend Road to the west and the railway line to the south, the plan is to separate it into two areas.

In the second of these neighbourhoods, bounded by the M60 to the east, Lostock Road to the north, Crofts Bank Road to the west and the railway line to the south, the plan is to separate it into six areas.

In both, certain streets are accessible from certain sides only courtesy of the creation of closures and one-way systems, and cycling and walking are safer thanks to changes to crossings and junctions. A similar scheme appeared to be shelved in Sale after criticism from residents last year.

An online consultation opens on October 2 with an in-person consultation for the week starting October 16.

Aidan Williams, Trafford Council's executive member for climate change, said: "Our proposals wish to explore how making cycling and walking much easier will allow Urmston's residents to connect to other routes. Our children would benefit from less traffic and would be much safer when playing outside.

"I would urge anyone with an interest to see us in person or to visit the website to find out more and have their say."
