The organisers of the Manchester Marathon released a map of the road closures for the run.

The marathon, sponsored by Adidas after the end of a sponsorship by Therme, is on April 16.

The route starts and ends in Old Trafford and also takes in Stretford, Sale, Altrincham and Timperley.

To allow the runners to compete in safe conditions a number of roads in these areas are to be closed.

The road closures are at specific times between 10am on the Saturday and midnight on the Sunday and are to be crossed at specific locations.

All of the information is contained in the map of which there are downloadable and printable versions on the Manchester Marathon website.

The website reads: "Closures will be in effect along and immediately around the adidas Manchester Marathon route, and those roads in the surrounding area that are open will be very busy so please plan extra times for any journeys you need to take. Many bus services will also be diverted due to these closures.

"We recommend using Metrolink to travel to and from the event as there are several stops close to the event village, start line and finish line in Trafford."

In 2022, more than 24,000 runners took on the Manchester Marathon.

The field was led by elite athletes, with Jonny Mellor and Becky Briggs the winners of the male and female events in times of 2:10:46 and 2:29:04 respectively.

While Britain dominated these events, it was Poland who did so in the wheelchair event, with wins for Samuel Kolek (1:48:24) and Martyna Snopek (2:40:24).

After the elite athletes came thousands of other runners, 38 per cent of whom took on the challenge of a marathon for the first time.

They raised funds for hundreds of charities such as Alzheimer's Society, British Heart Foundation, Cancer Research UK and Sense.

More than £30,000 was also raised for the Disasters Emergency Committee's Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal through the sale of special race bibs bearing the flag of the war-torn nation.
