My mother, Sylva (not Sylvia) Stubbs (nee Steelsmith) died in 2003 aged 84.

She was raised by her mother Eveleen Steelsmith and until 1934 they lived with her maternal grandparents, Joe and Sarah Shaw, publicans at the Swan Inn, 43 Melbourne Street, Hulme.

Joe played bowls in a south Manchester league which included the Bay Maltonat Oldfield, Altrincham.

He would take his young granddaughter to this 'pub in the countryside' on the tram and she made good friends with the little boy who lived there, named 'Brom' (presumably short for Bromley).

The postcard (LEFT/RIGHT/ABOVE) of the Bay Malton, which Brom sent to his young friend Sylva, dates from circa 1925. On the back his note says that he is the little boy at the door. The note is supplemented by another saying 'Love from Macolie'.

I wonder if any of your readers might recognise a family connection and know the surname of Brom? I am researching my family and local history and would be delighted to get more information.
