A POINT of correction. The development of the area around Old Trafford cricket ground, was not LCCC-led as claimed, but Tesco-led.
The council used the money paid by Tesco for council-owned land to subsidise LCCC, a private members’ club, towards the cost of a massive redevelopment of the ground.
In return, the borough has seen one Ashes Test over and above what might otherwise have been expected at the ground in any case.
There are apparently no further Ashes Tests expected in the near future. Not a great return for a huge public subsidy.
I’m convinced that there were lots of better ways to spend that money for the economic and social benefit of the borough and its people.
I wish LCCC well, but let’s not pretend that the regeneration of the ground was anything other than a means of Tesco getting its new store with the support of the council.
