A QUICK comment on the ‘sin bin’ article.
I’m not at all surprised to read this.
I told the council more than 12 months ago this was not feasible.
I have extensive email correspondence and met with them to discuss it.
To go from 140 litres of non-recyclable waste to 70 litres a week just by moving food waste from one bin to another was never going to work.
This suggests half my grey bin is food waste – ridiculous.
The report which backed the move was based on weight not volume but it's quite obvious food waste weighs more than other waste and takes up less room.
I suspect people are putting non-recyclable waste in the blue green and black bins to compensate.
I also suspect people are fly-tipping which will cost the council more in the long run than the reduced bin collection will save.
I am also keen to know what the impact has been on litter bins in the high street I suspect domestic waste is being put in bins usually reserved for occasional waste, not household waste.
It was also interesting to know a household of five gets a 240 litre grey bin as opposed to a household of four which get 140.
This is a 72 per cent bigger bin for a 25 per cent increase in size of household.
