AFTER a superb 5-1 demolition of Shaw Lane in midweek, Altrincham failed to extend their lead at the top of the Evo-Stik Premier as they suffered their first away league defeat since September, 2-0 at Rushall Olympic.

The omens were not favourable before kick off as Altrincham were without an injured trio of influential players in defenders Connor Hampson and Ben Harrison, as well as midfielder James Poole.

In addition, left-back Andy White was not fit enough to start and the heavy pitch at Rushall proved to be a tricky surface, having only passed a pre-match inspection after heavy overnight rain.

On a bobbly surface, Altrincham started the game the better but failed to create any clear chances.

However, Olympic grew into the game and finished the first half strongly, with their captain Sam Whittall heading home a stoppage-time corner before the interval.

Alty made a change at the break with midfielder Simon Richman moving to right-back as Max Harrop replaced Sam Heathcote, who was making his first start since returning to the J. Davidson Stadium.

The Robins did manage to test home goalkeeper Joe Slinn several times but struggled to find their customary fluency on the difficult surface.

Rushall, who had flirted with the relegation places earlier in the season, showed why they are the division's form team as they scored a second goal two minutes from time.

Left-winger Dan Waldron got round Tom Hannigan to drive a shot past Alty keeper Tony Thompson.

This was the first of four away games for Altrincham in a 10-day spell.

After Monday's home clash against Marine was postponed, Alty now visit Shaw Lane, Lancaster and Stourbridge.

With Poole and Harrison likely to be lengthy absentees, Altrincham will need their replacements to step up to the plate if they are to clinch the championship.

ALTRINCHAM: Thompson, Densmore, Heathcote, Hannigan, Jones, Moult, Johnston, Richman, Hulme, Peers, Hancock. Subs: Harrop, Merrie, White, Bailey-Jones, Jones.
